Are you, your family, your friends, or your romantic partner planning to take a hiking adventure soon? As you likely already know, hiking can be fun and exciting, but it can be dangerous at the same time. Of course, there are a number of different steps that you can take to protect yourself on your next hiking adventure and a few of those steps are outlined below.
If you have yet to choose your hiking trail, you will want to do so soon. The sooner that you choose your hiking trail, the easier it will be to familiarize yourself with where you will be hiking. When choosing a hiking trail, it is advised that you take the difficulty level into consideration. For instance, you can find hiking trails in the United States that are designed for beginners, as well as those that have advanced hiking experience.
Once you have decided which hiking trial you would like to hike on, you will want to take the time to fully familiarize yourself with the trail. If you are able to acquire a map of the hiking trial in question, you will want to closely examine it. You will want to know exactly where you are at all times, as well as how to get out of the area, in the event of an emergency. If you do acquire a map of the hiking trial that you plan on hiking, you will want to make sure that you bring a copy of the map with you. This will also assist you in the event of an emergency.
You will want to think about familiarizing yourself with the security of the hiking trial or park in question; get their contact information so you can contact them in the event of an emergency. Speaking of contacting security guards, you will want to make sure that you bring a cell phone with you. A cell phone will allow you to call for help if you or someone in your hiking party has an accident or wanders off the trail. If you do not own a cell phone, you may want to think about buying a cheap prepaid one or borrowing the cell phone of someone that you know.
Although it is important that you bring a cell phone with you on your next hiking adventure, a cell phone is not all that you will want to bring. Even if you are only planning on hiking for a day or two, you will want to make sure that you have enough food and drinks, just incase something went wrong. Many hikers are urged to prepare for the worst, just incase. For that reason, you may want to think about packing a number of extra snacks and drinks.
Another great way that you can stay safe on your next hiking adventure is by making sure that you have all of the right hiking equipment or hiking supplies. In this aspect, you will want to make sure that you are dressed for the hike. Hiking should involve sneakers at the least, but you may want to think about buying a set of hiking boots. You will also want to review the weather before leaving. Even if it will be bright and sunny, you may still want to think about bringing a light coat with you, incase of rain or incase you become stranded on the hiking trail overnight.
Perhaps, the best way that you can go about staying safe on your next hiking adventure is by letting your friends and family members know where you are going, when you will be leaving, and when you will return. Should you not return on time, those that you know should be able to find you, or at least have a generalized idea of where you are. You may also want to think about writing down the same information and leaving it at a safe place at home.
The above outlined hiking safety tips are just a few of the many that you may want to think about practicing. As a reminder, hiking can be fun and exciting, but it can also be dangerous as well.

When you take hold of your car
’s steering wheel, you are primarily charged with the safe departure and arrival while traveling. Bear in mind that as a driver, you must at all times be vigilant, alert and focused as you drive along toward selected destination. One wrong move and all else would end in a disaster. To avoid worst case scenarios when driving, always remember the following:
1. Fasten your seatbelt.
Once inside the vehicle, it is mandatory that all seatbelts be tightly fastened. Lock the doors accordingly, make sure that the youngest passenger is secured. Drivers reduce the risk of accidents on the road if they follow all traffic rules and regulations, be courteous and give way whenever warranted by the situation. Always keep proper distance from other vehicles while driving on the road. Exercise due caution whenever changing lanes. Use your signal lights and have your brakes examined regularly to be sure its working accordingly. Once you reach an intersection, slow down. Watch for traffic lights, pedestrian crossing and other vehicles going through your direction.
2. Don’t Rush When Driving
I know, there are times when you need to drive fast to be where you need to be. But don’t be too reckless. When all people seem to rush, don’t do the same. Remain focused and stay calm. Be keen, always pay attention and concentrate on the road. Put off cellular phones, laptops or ipods when driving. If it’s really urgent to answer a call or message, simply stop a while and do so. Or better yet, get a headset so you can drive and talk at the same time.
3. Always avoid eating or drinking while on the road.
Eating or drinking while on the road can make you loose grip of the steering well or divert your focus off the road. You may be more conscious of the food getting all messed up in your car than paying due attention on the road.
4. Don’t drive if you are sleepy or dizzy.
When there’s a need to drive during night time, be sure you’re not driving while sleepy or dizzy. If you are sleepy, your eyelids become heavy and you yawn constantly, thus you are in danger of falling asleep while driving! This is one of the most dangerous situations experienced by drivers and it often leads to several accidents on the road. Whenever you feel sleepy, the brain starts to black out and shut down, it then affects your concentration and your thinking. Be sure to remain awake while driving.
5. Do not drink and drive.
As a cardinal rule, we always hear ‘don’t drink and drive.’ Drunk driving is the cause of many accidents and deaths that is why state laws penalize this omission heavily.
6. Never take medicines with drowsy effect before you hit the road.
Do not drink and eat much when you know you will be driving yourself home. Do not take medicines with drowsy effects before hitting the road. Be sure to have somebody to accompany you to keep you engaged and awake while your drive on the road. If possible, try to get a nap once in a while during long road trips. If feeling sleepy or drowsy, best to stop in a safe spot and take power naps.
Moreover, other personal safety tips will include your mood, physical and overall emotional condition. Eyesight or regular visual check is always necessary. Regularly glancing at your blind spot will help you in determining traffic and other motorists surrounding you, making you more updated with their movements. The most important of all safety rules is to avoid driving aggressively and quarrelling while on the road.
Lastly, enjoy driving with all these helpful tips and guidelines in mind.

Halloween being the oldest holiday that is being celebrated. It is the only festival that is being celebrated earlier than Christmas. It is believed to have been started in what is now known as Ireland. Ancient people known as Celts observed Samhain at the end of the season, thus accounting to the biggest day of celebration in the entire year.
Samhain signified the harvest of crops and it also required the preparations that were required for the survival of winter. The Celts believed that October 31st was not only the end of summer but it was also the beginning of something darker and scarier. It was also believed that the people who had expired the last year would come and walk on the earth .They believed that no person was safe unless some precautions were taken. They believed that these dead would take their bodies. So villages gathered around large bonfires and offered honor to the dead and also offered gifts of fruits, vegetables and animals to pagan gods. To make sure that none of them would recognize them they dressed up in the hides of the skins.
Now here are some of the Halloween safety tips:
- Plan costumes that are short enough and they do not have much chance to get entangled and catch fire .Also do take care that the shoes fit well.
- Secure emergency identification with Halloween dress code or through bracelet
- Be very much careful with the selection of props like knives, injury, be careful that they are soft and flexible to prevent injury.
- Openly discuss with the people the required code of conduct during the Halloween.
- Take extra effort to eliminate the dangers on your pavement Be cautious with the area of your flower pots , support wires that may prove as an obstacle to the children while they move from one house to another thus increasing the chances of dripping and falling off.
- Always have the habit of carrying a flashlight after the dark for trick or tracking it helps you to see.
- While walking it is always preferable to walk on the pavement facing the traffic.
- Do not ride your bikes, take a pair of roller blades or skates.
- It is always preferable to visit houses which have Halloween decorations displayed.
- Have a spare bag in case your candy breaks.
- One thing which should be seriously considered is to never touch people pet, there is a chance that they might bite.
- For the parents one safety measure which is very important is to prevent your child from eating the candy until you examine it well.
We hope that these tips would be very much useful to you for the Upcoming Halloween festival and Happy Halloween…

Rollerblading is a wonderful sport and great exercise to keep you physically fit. People from all walks of life enjoy rollerblading simply because it is easy and fun. Coupled with this enjoyment of rollerblading are some important safety measures that you need to follow to avoid accidents or injuries.
Certain situations are beyond your control but that does not mean you should throw all caution to the wind. You may take a nasty spill every now and then where you may suffer minor injuries such as scraped knees or bruised hands. Or you may suffer more serious injuries such as a collision or concussion from rollerblading. So it is absolutely critical that you use the proper safety rollerblading gear to avoid these injuries.
Rollerblade helmet is the most important piece of rollerblade protective equipment for rollerblading. Never ever rollerblade without securing your helmet on first to avoid serious head injuries. Make sure that the helmet is of good quality and that it fits your head properly. Oversized rollerblade helmets are no good because it provides no protection whatsoever. On the other hand small helmets are too tight and too uncomfortable. The interior lining of the helmet should be lined with cushioned padding for comfort and protection.
Other rollerblading safety tips include:
1. Get the complete rollerblading protective gear such as wrist guards, elbow pads and kneepads
Each gear has its own specific safety function, and they are all designed to protect the main parts of your body from injuries and impact in case you land or fall accidentally. Not using these protective gears may result in a bruised knee or broken wrist etc.
2. Learn the rollerblading basics first before you go on roads
To avoid accidents, you should practice the basics such as rollerblading forward, stopping and turning before you decide to rollerblade on the road.
3. Self-control and speed control matters
Be aware of your surroundings especially when you are rollerblading on the road. If you are rollerblading too fast, then slow down. You will be prone to accident if you do not learn how to control your speed.
4. Watch out for road signs and road hazards
Watch out for potholes or cracks on the road, or for slippery oil or water patches, as missing these dangers might cause you to fall.
5. Always be courteous to fellow rollerbladers and pedestrians
You do not own the road; you share it with other rollerbladers and pedestrians, so be polite and courteous.
6. Traffic rules should still prevail
Follow traffic rules such as stopping at the red light when crossing the road in case oncoming cars do not see you.
Bear in mind that rollerblading is a great sport but could also be dangerous. As long as you keep the above safety tips in mind, rollerblading is a fun and enjoyable activity.

We all have enough “In memory of…” patches on our vest and do not wish to add any more. So here are 11 motorcycle riding tips to remind us of the things that can keep us in one piece and out of the hospital.
· If you are a novice, sign up for and attend a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. Not only will this course teach you lots of the things that will help keep you safe but your motorcycle insurance will probably be slightly lower as well - and who doesn’t want to save on insurance, especially when riding in states with Helmet Optional laws that require large bodily injury coverage to enjoy the right for those who ride to decide.
· Remind yourself where your suicide or kill switch is located. This switch, if you realize you are going to have to drop the bike, can save you from having your own motorcycle run over you causing injury.
· If you are just learning to ride and live in a highly populated area, have an experienced rider take you and your bike into an area with little or no traffic. A parking lot of a closed business works very well. Neighborhood streets can cause the residents to complain. Ride in this controlled environment until you feel completely in control of the vehicle. Learn how to stop and start easily and smoothly. Learn how long it takes to stop safely - it isn’t the same as stopping a car.
· First-time street riders should choose a time of day when the traffic is at a low. Jumping into rush hour traffic can easily lead to an accident on your very first outing. Select a route that takes you into very low traffic zones such as through neighborhoods, scenic routes and avoid at all cost getting on a freeway until you gain quite a lot of experience.
· Never, ever become aggressive toward a car or truck driver. Those cars win every single time in a road rage situation. They are bigger, heavier and have a lot more power. If someone tailgates you, tap your brake lights a few times and if they don’t back off, change lanes or give them the road by pulling off to the side
· We all know black is the only cool biker color, right? Well, if you are going to be riding at night in a poorly light area, it is much more important to be seen than to be cool, no matter what your friends say! Be sure your lights are bright and clean for maximum visibility but also consider placing reflective tape on the back of your helmet (if you use one) and maybe a glow in the dark patch on your back.
· Never trust cages. Car drivers somehow, no matter how loud or how rowdy bikers can be, manage to simply not see us! The blind spot in most cars is sufficiently large for a motorcycle to be completely hidden from view. But other cage drivers simply don’t seem to look for us. Unless, of course, they son, daughter, husband or wife happens to ride; unfortunately, we can’t tell who those people are and have to be doubly aware of other vehicles than when driving a car.
· Never assume that just because there is no turn signal on that car that it isn’t going to turn right in front of you. No matter how many other drivers don’t use turn signals, ALWAYS use yours and, if you have a passenger during daylight, hand signals can be an extra preventative measure.
· You know those trucker bumper stickers that say “If you can’t see my mirrors, I can’t see you”? Well, use this same common sense when riding. If you can’t see the driver’s face in the rear view mirror of the vehicle in front of you, chances are they can’t see you at all. Stay out of blind spots at all times.
· Once you become an experienced rider, when riding on city streets, always allow room for other people’s errors. An added safety tip is that you should remain aware of where you would choose to put the scoot down if the need arose. If you get in trouble and have any time at all, select where to lay the motorcycle instead of allowing traffic or the bike to determine that for you. If you can elect to place the bike on the ground, allowing it to move out from between your legs at low speed, you will experience much less road rash than allowing momentum to take you with the motorcycle.
· Novice riders should never carry passengers. That comes later with more road experience. The movements of a rider can cause a situation where you can easily lose control, especially at very low speeds.
Above all, plan for safety so you will come home safely to ride again another day. Road rash and accidents costing hundreds of thousands in medical bills are all too common. Be defensive and be aware to avoid losing your bike - or worse, your life.

Baby stacking toys are one of the most popular developmental toys in the market. These include stacking rigs, dishes and similar toys. Stacking rings help the baby in learning more than one thing at a time, are fun to play as well, therefore these should top the list of every parents’ list for plush baby toys.
Before setting in for a particular baby stacking toy, make sure to look for a few things in particular. They should be playable at various levels of difficult and the rings should be distinct in color, with at least five rings in the set. Such an arrangement would enable you to guarantee the fact that the stacking toy is indeed an exercise for your baby’s brain as well.
Baby stacking toys come in different shapes and material, with plastic and wood topping the list. Plastic stacking toys are the most common and are easily available at your local store. Wooden toys are more hygienic and safe to use, but the use of wood might limit the range of colors used.
Who doesn’t want his or her baby to be a prodigy like Einstein? If not Einstein, some toys ranges which are affectionately called “baby Einstein toys”, do promise that your child’s brain develops to an optimum level at least. From the helpless toddler to an inquisitive one year old, educational toys play a rather important role in shaping your child’s thought process.
Apart from stacking games, toys containing non-destructive mirrors of different colors and sizes can be fun for your one year old. Growing children always love to see themselves in the mirror. It is not only a fun activity; rather it is an important aspect of self realization. Such activities also increase your child’s hand-eye coordination and are important from the point of view of mental stability.
Squeeze plush toys are also very important for the developmental growth of your toddler. These makes a squeaking sound when they are squeezed, and therefore, stimulate the sense of hearing of your toddler. Such toys can play an important role in honing your baby’s problem solving skills. You can hide a number of squeeze toys and ask your baby to find them in a given period of time. This would teach him to act under pressure and sharpen his mental acumen.
Cars, trucks and toys depicting vehicles can also be great for your child’s learning abilities. Just make sure that there are no choking hazards involved with these and that there are no loose parts or pointed edges. Such toys can help your child’s memorizing and recalling abilities when he sees an actual car or truck similar to his toy, on the road. Plush, soft balls of different sizes and colors also help in motorizing your baby’s skills. Play handball or softball with your baby to develop his coordination with the ball and moving objects. Educational cardboard games, building blocks and charts depicting colors, fruits, vegetables, animals and flags of various countries can also be added as and when you think that your baby’s learning abilities are improving and the level of external stimulus needs to be increased.

Parents can protect their youngsters from a surprising danger. Every day, 300 young children with burn injuries are taken to emergency rooms. They haven’t even been near a flame. The children are victims of scalds.
Scald burns (caused by hot liquids, steam or foods) are the most common burn injury among children age 4 and younger. U.S. hospitals treat an estimated 16,000 children under 5 for scalds a year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Mortality rates from scalds are highest for children under age 4.
While the injuries and the numbers are distressing, even more disturbing is that many of these burns could have been prevented.
That’s why Shriners Hospitals for Children, a network of 22 pediatric specialty hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, and members of Shriners of North America, the fraternity that supports the hospitals, emphasize “Heat. It Doesn’t Take Flames to Burn” in an intense national campaign that highlights the importance of learning about scald injuries and keeping children safe.
How Scalds Happen
Ninety-five percent of scalds occur in residences. Scald burns are typically related to ordinary activities-bathing, cooking and eating-and often happen to children because of a lapse in adult supervision or a lack of protective mea-sures. Youngsters may not understand or even be aware of potential dangers of hot liquids (especially water) and foods; they simply trust adults to keep them safe.
In addition, young children have thinner skin that burns more quickly than adults’. People of all ages can be burned in 30 seconds by a flowing liquid that is 130° F; at 140° F, it takes only five seconds; at 160° F, it only takes one second. For children under 5, these temperatures can cause a burn in half the time.
Preventing Scalds
According to the National Safe Kids Campaign, most scalds occur while bathing. Continuous supervision of young children is the most important factor in preventing tap-water scald injuries, but there are additional simple preventive measures that can be taken. These include lowering the temperature settings on water heaters to 120° F or less and installing anti-scald devices on water faucets and showerheads. When bathing a child, fill the bathtub with cold water first. Mix in warmer water carefully and place the child away from the faucet. The bathwater temperature should be about 100° F. Test the water temperature by moving a hand rapidly through the water. If the water feels hot to an adult, it is too hot for a child.
Some tips to prevent scalds in the kitchen include testing heated food and liquids before serving children and keeping young children away from cooking and sink areas when in use. Also, be aware that toddlers can pull on tablecloths and appliance cords, spilling hot items on themselves, so it’s important to keep foods and liquids away from the edges of count-ers and tables. Another safety tip is to avoid using area rugs in the kitchen. They can contribute to falls and, secondarily, scalds.
Recognized as leaders in pediatric burn care, Shriners Hospitals operates three hospitals specifically dedicated to treating children with burn injuries. These hospitals are in Boston, Cincinnati and Galveston, Texas. A fourth facility, in Sacramento, Calif., specializes in burn injuries and orthopaedic conditions. Because of strides made in both research and clinical care since these hospitals first opened, a burned child’s chance of survival has more than doubled.
Children up to age 18 with burn injuries of all degrees, orthopaedic conditions, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate are eligible for admission and receive all care at no charge- regardless of financial need or relationship to a Shriner.
Scald burns are typically related to ordinary activities-bathing, cooking and eating-and often happen to children because of a lapse in adult supervision or a lack of protective measures.

Holidays or not, online shopping is fast becoming the main shopping choice for many people. People prefer online stores for their shopping needs over the brick-and-mortar stores for a variety of reasons - discounted prices, quick price comparisons, unavailability of desired items in the retail stores, 24 hours shopping convenience, etc. Whatever the reason is, before you jump into the online shopping bandwagon, you must consider a few things to avoid frustration and monetary loss.
Before you pull out your credit card to buy an item at an unbelievably reduced price, think about the reasons why the merchant is throwing out his profits. Maybe it is a total scam and they want your credit card number to rip you off. Or maybe they want your personal data. If you find a shopping site, usually advertised in a spam e-mail, that sells for example $100 software for $10, look out! You can bet that this is a scammer’s site. For this reason it is safe to stay with the big online shopping sites. Sites that are publicly traded or reputable private companies do not spam your email inbox with unsolicited advertisements. And these big online shopping sites have a state of the art secure checkout systems.
Before you select sites that are worthy of your hard earned money, ask your friends about their experiences with online shopping sites. Another approach is to use a search engine like Yahoo to search for items you plan to purchase. When you use Yahoo to search for an item, you will get advertised and non-advertised sites offering your searched items at different prices. Don’t simply jump to the first website that offers your searched item at the lowest price. Check out a few sites before you decide where to make the purchase.
Many sites like bizrate.com or nexttag.com offer price comparisons, reviews, and shopping site ratings. Use these sites to read reviews and to do a price comparison. Sites like techbargains.com publish information on latest bargains, coupons, and discounts offered by various online shopping sites. Websites like deals2buy.com offer everyday hot deals and coupons. Monitoring this type of sites provides opportunities to get great bargains. One comparison shopping site, buysafeshopping.com, provides information on qualified shopping sites that have gone through a screening process for merchant’s identity, online sales experience, and the ability to deliver purchased items.
If you have to shop with an unknown online merchant, check for their telephone number at their website. Contact someone at the merchant’s physical location and talk to them. Ask them about their privacy and refund policy. If you cannot find a phone number or the phone number goes to a voice mail instead to a live person, go shopping somewhere else. There are dozens, if not hundreds, good online merchants for any items you want to buy.
At the online checkout counter, you have to use a credit card to pay. When you use your credit card, make sure that your credit card and personal information are sent using encryption to avoid someone intercepting your information for unauthorized use. To check for encryption, look for https in the URL. It is perfectly safe if the site has http in its URL for all pages except the order page - the page where you enter your credit card and other personal information like address, etc. Also, look for a closed lock icon in the bottom right corner that indicates the webpage is secure. Avoid public computers at cafes, airports, etc. for your purchases. The danger is that hackers can install key-loggers to log your key strokes before they are encrypted.
Always use a credit card to pay for your online purchases. Most credit cards have online purchase protection. If something goes wrong, you can always call your credit card company and dispute the charge. You do not have to pay for your disputed charges till the dispute is resolved. Federal laws limit your liability to $50 in charges should someone uses your card fraudulently. Never use a debit card. Debit cards pull money out of your bank account as soon as the transaction is made. If you are ripped off, it may take months before you get your money back - that is if you ever see it again.
How safe is online shopping? If you are careful, you can guard yourself against identity and credit card thefts by following safety tips, such as the ones discussed above. A big safety tip is that you have to have a firewall, antivirus software and anti-phishing software on your computer to be completely confident that your online transaction would be processed securely.

When parents send their children for after school programs, they take it for granted that the child is safe. But since the number of children participating in these activities has increased, it is necessary to look into safety issues.
Children are vulnerable when they are outside the classes. While going or returning, they should know the safest route to take. Many kids hang out with their friends just after these classes. Find out ‘danger zones’ from your neighbors and make the children aware of these.
The child has to know how to handle emergencies. It is better to discuss various scenarios with your child. Tell her what she should do in case the class is suddenly cancelled. Show her the first-aid kit at home and make sure she knows whom to call in an emergency. Post any important contact information in a place that is easily accessible to the child. If the child will be alone at home, discuss a few unexpected things with her. Tell her to use the safety chain ALWAYS.
Relay on your neighbors and friends when needed. Let your child know who can be contacted at times of emergency. Ask your child to check in by phone. Above all, always tell the child to be in a group. Visiting toilets all alone or going home via isolated streets must be avoided.
